The mug that starts your morning right, chemically and otherwise.

300ml of terracotta clay with a well-balanced loop handle and smooth Aqua-Lock interior glaze. Pre-seasoned exterior. XRF-certified. The clay mug retains heat 20+ minutes longer than a ceramic mug of equivalent size. The clay’s alkaline mineral surface reduces tea astringency measurably. And unlike the glazed ceramic mugs from unnamed factories that most people drink from every morning, this one has a lab report.

Key Features & Benefits

  • 20+ Minutes Longer Heat Retention: Clay’s thermal mass keeps your morning chai at comfortable drinking temperature longer than ceramic, glass, or steel. The first sip and the last sip are the same temperature. This is the most immediately noticeable difference from a ceramic mug.
  • Flavour Chemistry: The same alkaline mineral interaction that improves chai in a kulhad applies here. Clay-boiled chai or coffee in a clay mug: measurably less astringent, more rounded flavour. Not a subtle effect — most people notice it in the first week.
  • Ergonomic Loop Handle: The result of six prototypes. The loop is sized for index-finger grip with the remaining three fingers below — natural, stable, no flex under 300ml load. 3mm thicker than most commercial mugs: more robust and more intentional in the hand.
  • Aqua-Lock Interior: Smooth, sealed, non-reactive. The exterior remains natural clay — warm, textured, distinctly not mass-produced.
  • XRF Certified: Batch QR on base.
  • Pre-Seasoned: First use: wash with water, make chai.

About the Material

300ml is not arbitrary. It is two proper cups of South Indian filter coffee with decoction and full milk. It is one generous cup of masala chai in the North Indian tradition — not the tiny 100ml shot size but the substantial, satisfying morning cup. Not the 500ml oversized vessel that has become fashionable for no good reason: 500ml of chai goes cold before you finish it. The handle on the clay mug is formed during making — a clay handle pulled, shaped, and attached to the body while both are wet. The bond point is reinforced with additional clay during attachment. After firing, this joint is a single continuous ceramic material, not an attachment point that can fail with regular use.

The Science

Most people have never thought about what their morning coffee mug is made of. The glazes on commercial ceramic mugs contain zinc oxide, barium carbonate, lithium carbonate, and various metal oxides. All are food-safe at room temperature. Not all are completely inert at 80–90°C, which is where fresh chai and coffee sit for 10–15 minutes after pouring. The Aqua-Lock glaze on the Klayvi mug is a single-mineral glaze — not a multi-compound mixture — which means fewer chemical interactions between the glaze and the hot liquid.

Caring for Your Klayvi

1 — First UseRinse with plain water. Cook something water-based for first 2–3 uses.
2 — Daily CleanKlayvi Wash Care (pH 6–8) or sisal scrubber + warm water. Never standard dish soap — its pH 9–11 destroys the seasoning layer.
3 — After WashDry completely on low flame for 2 minutes. Never store damp.
4 — MonthlyApply 4–5 drops cold-pressed flaxseed oil. Heat on medium-low until just smoking (~4 min). Cool and wipe.
5 — NeverDishwasher · Microwave · Overnight soaking · Chemical detergents · Cold water on a hot vessel

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: My coffee tastes different in the clay mug. Is that normal?
Yes — and it is desirable. Clay’s alkaline mineral contribution reduces coffee’s natural acidity slightly, producing a less sharp, more rounded cup. Most people prefer it after a week. If you actively prefer high-acidity coffee, the clay mug will not suit you — the flavour softening is real and consistent.

Q: Can I put the clay mug in the freezer for iced coffee?
The clay mug can go in the freezer (not for extended periods, but a 30-minute chill is fine). Going from freezer directly to hot liquid is not recommended — the thermal shock from near-freezing to 85°C is significant. Let the frozen mug warm to room temperature before adding hot liquid.

Q: The exterior of the mug is getting darker near the base. Why?
The exterior clay naturally absorbs and reacts to proximity to warm surfaces. If the mug rests on a warm surface after being filled, or is placed near a heat source, the exterior clay darkens. This is the clay’s natural patina of use. It is not a problem.

Q: Can I make chai directly in the clay mug (on a hob)?
The mug is not designed for direct flame use. The Aqua-Lock interior glaze is not rated for cooking temperatures, and the handle design is for carrying, not for hob placement. For making chai in clay directly, use the sauce pan series.

Q: Does the mug come with a saucer?
No saucer is included. A natural wood or cork coaster underneath the mug works well — particularly since the clay exterior’s evaporative moisture can leave a faint ring on polished surfaces.

Q: How do I remove coffee stains from the interior?
The Aqua-Lock glaze releases coffee staining more easily than unglazed clay. For mild staining: warm water + sisal scrubber. For persistent staining: fill with warm water and a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda, let stand 30 minutes, scrub and rinse. The bicarbonate is pH-neutral enough not to affect the glaze.
