Plants that grow down. In the vessel that lets them breathe.
A 15cm tapered clay planter suspended by a handwoven natural jute macrame hanger of four braided cords meeting at a brass ring. Drainage hole. Cork base pad. Aqua-Lock interior below soil line. XRF-certified. The pot sits in the cradle of the cords rather than having a hook pierced through it — weight is distributed across four contact points, not concentrated at a single hole. Remove the pot from the cradle for watering. Rehang in 30 seconds.
Key Features & Benefits
- Cradle-Not-Hook Suspension: The macrame cradle distributes the weight of the filled pot across four cord-contact points. A single hook through the clay is a structural weakness and a concentration point for corrosion. The cradle is stronger, gentler on the clay, and allows the pot to be easily removed for watering.
- Handwoven Jute Macrame: Natural jute, not synthetic rope. The four-cord braid to the brass ring is handwoven and adjustable in hang height. Jute’s natural texture is visually appropriate with terracotta clay.
- Ideal for Trailing Plants: String of pearls, burro’s tail, English ivy, tradescantia, heart-leaf philodendron, pothos: all trailing species that look significantly more beautiful hanging than sitting on a shelf. The 15cm size is right for the scale of these plants at vigorous growth.
- Drainage Hole + Cork Base Pad: Drainage during watering is through the standard hole. The cork base pad prevents the drainage water from dripping immediately onto floors or furniture — water the pot in the sink, drain, rehang.
- Passive Humidity Contribution: Hanging clay planters contribute humidity to the air in their immediate vicinity. Multiple hanging clay planters in a cluster measurably improve ambient humidity in dry air-conditioned rooms.
- XRF Certified: Batch QR on base.
About the Material
The hanging planter’s macrame hanger is handwoven from 5mm natural jute rope — sourced from the same artisan cooperative that produces the cotton muslin storage pouches. The weave is a standard four-strand square-knot macrame pattern, adjusted for the 15cm pot diameter. The brass ring at the top is a 25mm solid brass ring — not plated, not painted. The full hanger (pot + jute + brass) is rated for 5kg load, significantly more than the maximum filled weight of 1.5kg. The pot sits in the cradle section of the hanger approximately 2cm from the base of the pot — this is the optimal grip point, below the centre of gravity of the filled pot, which prevents tilting in the cradle. The Science Trailing plants in hanging positions develop differently than the same species in shelf pots. In a hanging position, the stems grow toward and then past the pot rim, then trail downward under gravity. This growth pattern produces the characteristic cascading curtain of leaves that is the visual signature of the hanging plant — a form impossible to achieve with shelf positioning. The clay hanging planter enables this natural growth form while providing the root environment advantages of terracotta: drainage, oxygenation, and humidity regulation.

Caring for Your Klayvi
| 1 — First Use | Rinse with plain water. No soap on first use. |
| 2 — Daily Clean | Klayvi Wash Care (pH 6–8) or sisal scrubber + warm water. Never standard dish soap — it destroys seasoning at pH 9–11. |
| 3 — After Wash | Dry completely on low flame (cookware) or air-dry fully (decor/storage). Never store damp. |
| 4 — Monthly | Apply 4–5 drops cold-pressed flaxseed oil to cooking surfaces. Heat on medium-low until just smoking. Cool and wipe. |
| 5 — Never | Dishwasher · Microwave · Overnight soaking · Chemical detergents · Cold water on a hot vessel |

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How do I water a hanging plant without making a mess?
Remove the pot from the macrame cradle (lift from below). Take to a sink, water thoroughly, allow to drain fully for 3–5 minutes until no more water drips from the drainage hole. Rehang. The cork base pad can be left in the cradle during this process. This is the correct watering method for all hanging plants in drainage-hole pots.
Q: What height should I hang it?
A ceiling hook at 2–2.2 metres (the standard Indian ceiling height) with the hanger at full length positions the pot at approximately 1.4–1.5 metres — which allows trailing plants to cascade to approximately 0.8–1 metre from the floor. Adjust by shortening the hanger knots for a higher pot position.
Q: Can I hang multiple planters as a cluster?
Yes — hanging clusters of 3–5 planters at slightly different heights is one of the most effective biophilic interior installations. In a cluster, the individual humidity contributions of each clay pot combine to create a noticeably humid local microclimate that trailing plants particularly love.
Q: The jute hanger is getting hairy with use. Is that normal?
Yes. Jute is a natural plant fibre that develops a characteristic surface texture with handling and moisture exposure. The loosening of surface fibres is normal and does not affect the hanger’s structural integrity. A very light singeing with a match can tidy loose fibres if the appearance is a concern.
Q: Is the brass ring rust-proof?
Solid brass does not rust (rust is iron oxide; brass is copper-zinc). Brass can develop a verdigris patina (green-grey) in humid conditions over time. This is normal and is considered the natural ageing of brass. To prevent it: wipe the ring with a dry cloth after watering sessions. To remove it if developed: brass cleaning paste (natural lemon juice + salt mixture) on a cloth, rinse, dry.
Q: What is the maximum weight the hanger can support?
The jute hanger and brass ring system is rated for 5kg. A 15cm pot fully filled with soil and a mature string-of-pearls weighs approximately 0.8–1kg. The 5kg rating provides significant safety margin and accounts for the dynamic load of watering and any swinging.
