For the cook who uses clay and has figured out that metal scratches it.
Two food-grade silicone spatulas — one flat flipper for rotis and thin foods, one spoon-shaped stirrer for dal and curries — at precisely 40 Shore A hardness. Firm enough for proper stirring of viscous Indian dishes. Soft enough not to scratch the Ra ≤4µm clay surface that makes clay cookware non-stick. Heat-rated to 230°C. BPA-free, PFAS-free, phthalate-free. The only spatulas we recommend using with Klayvi clay.
Key Features & Benefits
- 40 Shore A — The Specific Hardness That Matters: Shore A measures hardness of flexible materials on a 0–100 scale. Standard silicone spatulas run 50–70 Shore A. Metal spatulas are off the scale. At 50+ Shore A, spatulas scratch the Ra ≤4µm clay surface at the microscopic level — invisible, but disrupting the polymerised oil layer. 40 Shore A: firm enough for proper stirring, soft enough to deform on contact with clay rather than abrading it.
- Flat Flipper for Tawa Work: Thin at the leading edge (approximately 2mm) for sliding under rotis and dosas without breaking them. Thickens toward the handle for rigidity during flipping. The profile is correct for the clay tawa’s cooking surface.
- Spoon Stirrer for Kadhai and Handi Work: The rounded bowl shape covers more surface area per stirring stroke than a flat spatula. Essential for thick dal and sabzi where you need to reach the base of the vessel across the full diameter in one motion.
- PFAS-Free Silicone: Not all silicone is PFAS-free. Processing aids in some silicone manufacturing include PFAS compounds. Our spatulas use food-grade silicone certified to be free of PFAS, BPA, phthalates, and formaldehyde-releasing compounds. Certification documentation available on request.
- 230°C Heat Rating: Rated for 230°C continuous contact — appropriate for the full range of Indian cooking temperatures in clay. For tadka at 280–320°C, remove the spatula from the vessel before adding ghee and spices. Reintroduce after the initial high-heat moment.
- Ergonomic Handle: Approximately 28cm total length. Long enough to keep your hand away from the rim of the handi or kadhai at high heat. The handle is 8mm diameter — thick enough to grip firmly during vigorous stirring, not so thick it feels unwieldy. About the Product The spatulas use platinum-grade food-grade silicone — the grade specified for medical and culinary applications, not the lower-grade silicone used in consumer kitchen products that can yellow or off-gas at high temperatures. The handle is a stainless steel core overmoulded with silicone — the steel provides rigidity, the silicone provides grip and heat insulation. The steel core is visible at the handle tip as a small silver circle — not a defect, a design feature that confirms the structural core. The Science The Ra ≤4µm surface roughness of Klayvi clay cookware is the result of specific surface preparation during making. Ra is the arithmetic mean surface roughness — at 4µm, this is approximately the smoothness of a well-seasoned cast iron pan. A 40 Shore A silicone spatula at this surface roughness deforms slightly on contact, conforming to the surface rather than dragging across it. This deformation is the protective mechanism: the spatula surface matches the clay surface rather than abrading it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I use these spatulas with non-clay cookware?
Yes — 40 Shore A silicone is safe for cast iron, stainless steel, enamel, and glass cookware. The hardness is on the softer end for metal cookware (which doesn’t benefit from the softness), but the spatulas work correctly on any surface.
Q: The flat spatula is flexible. Is it strong enough for heavy dough?
The stainless steel core provides the rigidity that the flat flipper needs for lifting. The silicone is flexible at the leading edge (which is correct for sliding under thin foods) but rigid at the midpoint where the steel core is present. For very heavy preparations (atta, thick halwa), the spoon stirrer is the more appropriate tool.
Q: How do I clean the spatulas?
Warm water and standard dish soap (soap is appropriate for silicone — only clay should avoid soap). The silicone surface releases food residue easily. Alternatively, place in the dishwasher on a normal cycle. Air-dry fully before storage.
Q: Will the 40 Shore A hardness eventually scratch clay surfaces?
Over extensive use (years of daily cooking), any mechanical contact with a surface causes some wear. The 40 Shore A hardness minimises this wear compared to harder spatulas. The clay surface, as it develops a thicker polymerised oil layer over time, also becomes progressively more resistant to wear. The two properties work together.
Q: Is the set suitable for woks and curved vessels?
The spoon stirrer specifically is designed for curved vessel interiors — the bowl shape of the spoon head follows the curve of a kadhai or handi interior naturally. The flat flipper is better suited for flat surfaces (tawa).
Q: What if one spatula breaks?
The spatulas are sold as a set of 2. Individual replacements are not currently available. The full set can be repurchased. Given the 230°C heat rating and platinum-grade silicone construction, the spatulas should last 3–5 years of daily use without degradation.
