The biryani bowl. The one that earns its place at the centre of the table.

A generous 2-litre open clay serving bowl for family-scale service. Bone Kaolin cream interior glaze. Natural terracotta exterior. Anti-topple cork base ring. XRF-certified. At 2L, this is the centrepiece serving vessel — the bowl that arrives at the table with the biryani, the one guests reach for, the one that makes the meal look like it was thought about.

Key Features & Benefits

  • Table Presence: At 2L and the proportionally wider diameter of the large bowl, this vessel makes a visual statement at the dining table. Terracotta at this scale is unmistakably intentional.
  • Biryani Serving Geometry: The wide, open form allows biryani to be served without collapsing the layered rice structure. The wide mouth lets guests see the saffron-tinted rice and the whole spices before they serve themselves.
  • Extended Heat Retention: At 2L, the clay’s thermal mass is substantial. A 2L bowl filled at 75°C will remain above 60°C for 25–30 minutes at the dining table without any reheating.
  • Bone Kaolin Interior: The cream-white interior maximises the visual impact of food at this scale. Saffron biryani. Deep red rajma. Golden kadhi. All look intentional against the Bone Kaolin.
  • Anti-Topple Cork Base: The 2L bowl is significantly heavier when full — approximately 2.5kg. The wide cork base ring is proportionally larger than the 500ml and 1L rings, providing stable footing at this weight.
  • XRF Certified: Batch QR on base.

About the Material

The 2L serving bowl is the largest in our serving bowl series. At this size, the Bone Kaolin glaze application requires two firing stages — the clay body is fired once at 850°C, then the glaze is applied and the piece is fired a second time at a lower temperature (750°C) to set the glaze without overfiring the clay body. This two-stage process is why the interior glaze is perfectly smooth while the exterior retains the natural character of the first firing.

The Science

The presentation of food affects appetite and perceived flavour before the first bite. This is well-documented in food psychology — food presented in visually appealing vessels is rated more flavourful than identical food in plain vessels. A 2L biryani in a cream-white-interior terracotta bowl, with the saffron-yellow rice visible against the pale glaze and the warm clay exterior visible around it, presents differently from the same biryani in a steel serving vessel. The difference is measurable in perceived quality.

Caring for Your Klayvi

1 — First UseRinse with plain water. Cook something water-based for first 2–3 uses.

3 — After WashDry on low flame for 2 minutes. Never store damp.
4 — MonthlyApply 4–5 drops of cold-pressed flaxseed oil. Heat on medium-low until just smoking at edges (~4 min). Cool and wipe.
5 — NeverDishwasher · Microwave · Overnight soaking · Chemical detergents · Cold water on a hot vessel

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I cook in the 2L serving bowl directly?
For very brief reheating on low gas (2–3 minutes), yes. For active cooking, use the kadhai or handi series — the serving bowl’s Bone Kaolin interior glaze is not designed for the temperature cycling and mechanical stress of regular cooking.

Q: Is the 2L suitable for gifting?
Yes — the 2L is our most gifted single serving piece. For a complete gifting set, pair it with the Katori Set of 6 (KL-SW-004) and the 12-inch thali (KL-SW-001) for a full clay table service gift.

Q: Can I use this for serving salads and cold dishes?
Yes. For cold salads, refrigerate the empty bowl for 30 minutes before filling. The clay will keep the salad noticeably cooler at the table than a room-temperature steel or glass bowl.

Q: The bowl has a slight variation in colour between the two sides. Is that normal?
Yes. The 2L bowl rotates slowly through the kiln, but the side closest to the kiln wall fires at a slightly different temperature than the far side — creating subtle colour variation. This is the kiln’s signature on your specific piece, not a defect.

Q: How many people does the 2L bowl serve for biryani?
As a centrepiece bowl with ladle-to-thali service: 5–6 people with moderate portions. For very generous servings, 4–5 people. The 2L holds approximately 600–700g of cooked biryani with rice at approximately 75% fill.

Q: Is the cork base ring removable for oven use?
The cork ring can be carefully pried off with a thin implement if needed for oven use. It reattaches with food-safe epoxy adhesive. We recommend leaving it on — the oven temperature at 200–250°C is unlikely to damage natural cork, but we have not specifically tested this.
