The thank-you that grows into something. The only card with a second life.

Ten handmade seed paper cards with embedded wildflower and herb seeds — marigold, sunflower, coriander, and ajwain — that germinate and grow when the card is planted in soil and watered. Klayvi K-leaf motif printed in natural soy ink. Blank reverse for handwriting. EN 13432-certified compostable. The zero-landfill alternative to every greeting card that has ever been received and discarded within 72 hours of arrival.

Key Features & Benefits

  • The Plantable Premise: When you are done reading it: tear the card into small pieces. Press into damp soil 1cm deep. Water regularly. Within 7–14 days, seedlings emerge. The paper decomposes completely within 3–6 weeks. The seeds grow. No landfill. The card has a second life more interesting than its first.
  • Indian Seed Selection — Grows in Indian Conditions: Marigold (genda): grows year-round in India, used for festivals and puja. Sunflower (surajmukhi): grows in spring-summer, produces seeds birds love. Coriander (dhaniya): edible herb, grows in cool weather, immediately useful. Ajwain (carom): edible herb, drought-tolerant, useful in the kitchen. All four germinate reliably across the Indian growing climate.
  • Soy Ink Printing: The Klayvi K-leaf motif and any text is printed with soy-based ink — which decomposes completely in soil without leaving petroleum-derived ink residue. The printing does not affect germination.
  • Handmade Paper Texture: Each card shows the irregular surface texture of handmade paper — slight variations in thickness, visible plant fibers, a surface that feels like it was made rather than manufactured. The seeds are visible as small dark specks in the paper matrix if you look closely.
  • EN 13432 Certified Compostable: The certification that confirms the paper decomposes in industrial composting conditions within 12 weeks and home composting conditions within 26 weeks, leaving no toxic residue. The certification covers both the paper matrix and the soy ink.
  • For Corporate and Personal Gifting: Included in every Klayvi corporate gift set (KL-CO-006). Available separately for personal gifting, housewarming notes, and any occasion where the gesture itself should grow into something. About the Product The paper base is made from 100% recycled cotton fiber — not wood pulp, which has lower biodegradability. The cotton fiber is processed into a paper pulp, embedded with seeds at the pulp stage (so they are distributed throughout the paper thickness), poured into rectangular moulds, pressed, and air-dried. The resulting paper is 280–320 gsm — heavy enough to write on, light enough to plant easily. The seeds are added at the correct depth in the paper matrix (approximately 1–2mm from the surface) so that when the paper is planted face-down in soil, the seeds are at the correct planting depth for germination. The Science Seed paper germination works through a simple mechanism: when wet soil surrounds the paper, the cotton fibers absorb moisture and the paper begins to decompose through bacterial and fungal action. As the paper softens and breaks down, the seeds it contains are exposed to soil moisture and the right temperature for germination. The paper decomposition acts as a mulch that keeps the soil moist around the germinating seeds — actually improving germination conditions compared to direct seeding.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can the card be written on with any pen?
Yes — ballpoint pen, fountain pen, felt tip. Pencil also works. Avoid very wet ink (some fountain pen inks) that might bleed through the handmade paper. Ballpoint is the most reliable on the textured surface.

Q: How long do I have before the seeds stop being viable?
The seeds are viable for 2–3 years from the production date. Each pack is printed with the production date. Store unused cards in a cool, dry place (not in direct sunlight, not in a humid environment) to maintain maximum viability.

Q: Should I plant the whole card or tear it first?
Tear into pieces approximately 4–5cm for best results. This exposes more seed-embedded paper surface to the soil and accelerates decomposition and germination. Planting the whole card is possible but germination may be slower at the centre.

Q: What soil should I use?
Any standard potting mix. The seeds are chosen to be undemanding of soil quality. For best results: a mix of regular garden soil and compost. Keep consistently moist but not waterlogged in the first 2 weeks. Germination occurs at 18–30°C.

Q: Can the cards be used outdoors in the garden directly?
Yes — plant in prepared garden soil in a location appropriate for the seed variety (marigold and sunflower: full sun; coriander and ajwain: partial shade in hot summers). Water regularly. Outdoor germination is equally reliable.

Q: Can I customise the cards with my own text or logo?
Custom printing (logo, message, or brand name in soy ink) is available for orders of 50+ packs. Contact us at custom@klayvi.in. Standard lead time for custom printing: 2 weeks.
