For the Monday batch that feeds the family all week. Or the feast that feeds

everyone. Five litres of clay for bulk boiling: a full kilogram of dry lentils (which triple in volume when cooked), a large rice batch for the week, a festive rasam pot. 8mm reinforced base. Anti-topple cork base ring. XRF + ICP-OES certified. The patila for batch cooking and celebration cooking — both valid reasons to own something this large.

Key Features & Benefits

  • Anti-Topple Cork Base Ring: A 5L patila filled with boiling dal weighs 7–8kg. The wide cork base ring extends the effective footprint of the vessel, preventing the tip-on-a-countertop scenario at full weight.
  • Batch Cooking Built-in: At 5L, you cook once and eat well for days. 1kg of dry toor dal + water fills the 5L appropriately and yields enough dal for 4 people for 3–4 days.
  • 8mm Base: More important at 5L than at any smaller size — the boiling convection currents in a 5L pot are significant. The reinforced base distributes the heat before it can create a scorching hotspot.
  • XRF + ICP-OES Certified: Batch QR on base.
  • Gas + Induction Ready: Adapter disc included.
  • Festive Scale: For Holi, Eid, Diwali, family gatherings — the 5L patila covers the boiling needs of a large gathering.

About the Material

At 5 litres, the clay body has significant thermal mass. This is a double-edged property: longer to heat (12–15 minutes to a rolling boil at medium-high flame), but significantly better heat retention afterward. A 5L patila at boiling temperature, switched off, will stay above 60°C for 30–40 minutes. For batch-cooked dal that is partially served and then kept warm — without reheating — this is practically useful. Weight consideration: 5L full + clay vessel weight = approximately 7.5kg. Two hands. Stable surface. Short carry distance.

The Science

The nutritional case for clay batch cooking is cumulative. If a household makes dal twice a week in a clay patila — 104 cooking sessions per year — and each session results in measurably improved mineral bioavailability compared to aluminium (documented in peer-reviewed literature), the annual cumulative difference in mineral intake is significant at the population level. This is not a product claim; it is the logic of compound small differences applied over time.

Caring for Your Klayvi

1 — First UseRinse with plain water. Cook something water-based (dal, rice water) for first 2–3 uses.
2 — Daily CleanUse Klayvi Wash Care (pH 6–8) or a sisal scrubber with warm water. Never standard dish soap — its pH 9–11 strips the seasoning.
3 — After WashDry completely on low flame for 2 minutes. Never store damp.
4 — MonthlyApply 4–5 drops of cold-pressed flaxseed oil. Heat on medium-low until it just smokes at the edges (~4 min). Cool. Wipe.
5 — NeverDishwasher · Microwave · Submerging overnight · Chemical detergents · Cold water on a hot pot

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: The 5L is very heavy. Are there any safety considerations?
Yes. Always use two hands when moving the 5L at any fill level above 1L. The anti-topple cork ring prevents tipping when stationary, but does not protect against drops during carry. Keep the carry distance short. Use oven mitts or thick folded towels when the vessel is hot.

Q: Can I use the 5L for outdoor cooking over a wood fire?
Yes. Clay is the original wood-fire vessel. Place on a stable tripod support or traditional chulha at medium wood-fire intensity. The 5L’s greater thermal mass makes it well-suited to wood fire, which tends to have more variable intensity than gas. The clay buffers temperature variation effectively.

Q: Is the 5L suitable for making bone broth at 8+ hours?
Yes, for bone broth. The 5L patila works for bone broths up to 8 hours. For 12–16 hour broths, the Slow Cooker series (KL-CK-024/025) is better suited — heavier walls, more appropriate thermal mass for very extended cooking.

Q: How do I store a 5L patila?
Vertically, on a stable shelf or floor. The anti-topple cork ring provides the stable base. Do not store horizontally — the flat base of the patila can absorb moisture if stored on damp surfaces. Keep in a dry cabinet or on a shelf with the cotton muslin pouch loosely draped over the opening.

Q: Can the 5L go into a conventional oven?
Yes, up to 250°C. Note: a 5L patila at this size is heavy to manoeuvre into and out of an oven. Pre-heat the oven with the patila inside (cold-start). Use oven mitts rated for the weight. The patila’s flat straight sides fit into standard Indian oven racks.

Q: Is there a 7L or 10L size for very large families?
Not currently. The 5L is our largest patila. For cooking at 10+ person scale, multiple 5L pots are more manageable than a single very large vessel — clay at 7L+ becomes very heavy and requires specific handling for safe use.
