About the Material

The soup bowl is a specific object that Indian table culture has historically not prioritised. The clay soup bowl restores the correct proportions: deep enough to hold 350ml comfortably, wide enough for easy drinking from the rim, with two handles sized for the specific physical action of lifting a hot bowl two-handed and drinking from it. The Bone Kaolin glaze on the soup bowl interior is particularly important for liquid-only soups. Thin soups require a clean, white interior surface to show their colour and clarity. Q: Can I make rasam directly in the soup bowl (on a stove)?
No — the Bone Kaolin interior is for serving, not cooking. The handles are for carrying, not for hob placement. Make rasam in the sauce pan or patila series, then transfer to the soup bowl for serving.

Q: The handles are small. Can I actually carry a full 350ml bowl by the handles?
Yes — the handles are sized for the index finger and middle finger of each hand, with the bowl resting on the palms below. This is the natural two-finger-per-side grip for a handled bowl. At 350ml (approximately 400–450g full including vessel), this grip is very stable.

Q: Can I use the soup bowls for Indian desserts like kheer?
Yes. The 350ml soup bowl is a good size for individual kheer service. The Bone Kaolin interior shows the rice and raisin composition of kheer beautifully. The two handles make it comfortable to hold as a dessert bowl.

Q: Is the pair matched in colour?

Serve at 80–85°C — the clay bowl will cool it to the optimal drinking temperature (70–75°C) within 2–3 minutes of serving. Pour hotter than you would for a ceramic bowl, as the clay absorbs some initial heat from the liquid. After a few uses, you will calibrate naturally.
