Bone broth. Rasam. Winter shorba. The vessel that keeps soup hot through
the whole bowl. Two 350ml clay soup bowls with two small loop handles on either side, smooth Bone Kaolin interior glaze, and natural terracotta exterior. XRF-certified. The handles are functional: 350ml of hot soup at 80°C cannot be carried single-handed by the rim without burning fingers. Two small lateral handles allow the traditional Indian practice of lifting the bowl and drinking directly — the clay’s warmth transferring through the handles to the palms, the soup arriving hot from first sip to last.
Key Features & Benefits
- Two Handles for Direct Drinking: The Indian tradition of drinking rasam, shorba, and thin soups directly from the bowl requires two comfortable handles. These are sized for both-hands cupping — the traditional posture that allows drinking from the rim.
- 350ml — The Proper Serving Size: A generous portion of rasam for one person. A therapeutic serving of bone broth. A complete bowl of shorba that satisfies without overfilling. Not the inadequate 200ml that leaves you wanting; not the excessive 500ml that cools before you finish.
- Heat Retention Through the Full Bowl: Clay at 350ml keeps soup above 65°C for 12–15 minutes at the dining table. The same soup in a ceramic bowl would be below 55°C at 12 minutes. Every sip is the correct temperature.
- Bone Kaolin Interior for Clarity: For clear soups (bone broth, rasam, shorba), the pale cream-white interior shows the colour and clarity of the broth. Golden bone broth against Bone Kaolin is visually beautiful and communicates quality.
- XRF Certified: Batch QR on base covers both bowls.
- Paired Set: Two bowls from the same batch for visual consistency.
About the Material
The soup bowl is a specific object that Indian table culture has historically not prioritised. The clay soup bowl restores the correct proportions: deep enough to hold 350ml comfortably, wide enough for easy drinking from the rim, with two handles sized for the specific physical action of lifting a hot bowl two-handed and drinking from it. The Bone Kaolin glaze on the soup bowl interior is particularly important for liquid-only soups. Thin soups require a clean, white interior surface to show their colour and clarity. Rasam’s deep amber-brown against cream-white Bone Kaolin. Bone broth’s golden clarity. Clear mushroom shorba. Each reads as more considered, more intentional, against this surface.
The Science
Soups cooked and served in clay retain heat significantly longer than in any other serving material. At 350ml in a clay bowl, the additional 10°C temperature advantage over ceramic translates to soup that remains in the ideal drinking temperature range (65–75°C) for the full duration of the bowl rather than cooling into the less flavourful below-60°C range partway through. For bone broth specifically, this temperature retention matters for a physiological reason: the gelatin and amino acids in bone broth are most effectively absorbed at body-proximate temperatures (55–65°C). Broth that has cooled to 45°C begins to gel and is consumed less efficiently. The clay bowl’s heat retention keeps bone broth in the optimal absorption temperature range throughout consumption.

Caring for Your Klayvi
| 1 — First Use | Rinse with plain water. Cook something water-based for first 2–3 uses. |
| 2 — Daily Clean | Klayvi Wash Care (pH 6–8) or sisal scrubber + warm water. Never standard dish soap — its pH 9–11 destroys the seasoning layer. |
| 3 — After Wash | Dry completely on low flame for 2 minutes. Never store damp. |
| 4 — Monthly | Apply 4–5 drops cold-pressed flaxseed oil. Heat on medium-low until just smoking (~4 min). Cool and wipe. |
| 5 — Never | Dishwasher · Microwave · Overnight soaking · Chemical detergents · Cold water on a hot vessel |

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I make rasam directly in the soup bowl (on a stove)?
No — the Bone Kaolin interior is for serving, not cooking. The handles are for carrying, not for hob placement. Make rasam in the sauce pan or patila series, then transfer to the soup bowl for serving.
Q: The handles are small. Can I actually carry a full 350ml bowl by the handles?
Yes — the handles are sized for the index finger and middle finger of each hand, with the bowl resting on the palms below. This is the natural two-finger-per-side grip for a handled bowl. At 350ml (approximately 400–450g full including vessel), this grip is very stable.
Q: Can I use the soup bowls for Indian desserts like kheer?
Yes. The 350ml soup bowl is a good size for individual kheer service. The Bone Kaolin interior shows the rice and raisin composition of kheer beautifully. The two handles make it comfortable to hold as a dessert bowl.
Q: Is the pair matched in colour?
Both bowls are selected from the same batch for colour consistency. They will share the same terracotta tone with natural kiln variation. They are paired by eye for the closest match available in the batch.
Q: Can I order a set of 4 soup bowls?
Two sets of 2 from the same batch can be ordered for 4 matched soup bowls. Note in your order that you want batch-matched pairs and we will fulfil from the same production run.
Q: What temperature should rasam be when served in the clay bowl?
Serve at 80–85°C — the clay bowl will cool it to the optimal drinking temperature (70–75°C) within 2–3 minutes of serving. Pour hotter than you would for a ceramic bowl, as the clay absorbs some initial heat from the liquid. After a few uses, you will calibrate naturally.
